If you are looking for adventure. . .
If you have an interest in the cultures and the environment of the Amazon. . .
If you want a physically challenging, radically cross-cultural immersion into an indigenous community. . .

. . . This is your DTS.

The Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a life-changing experience which will deepen your relationship with Christ, so that you can make Christ known among the nations. The Amazon DTS offers the same basic teaching and discipleship as a regular DTS, with special emphasis on the Amazon region. (Learn more about the DTS.)

How the Amazon DTS works:

  • Dates: Sept 28, 2008 - Feb 19, 2008
  • Stage 1: The first stage of the lecture phase takes place at the campus of YWAM Minneapolis. During this time, students in the Amazon DTS and the regular Fall DTS form a combined group.
  • Stage 2: Toward the end of the DTS Lecture phase, the Amazoners head to Iquitos, Peru, one of the main entrance points into the Amazon jungle. Iquitos provides a transitional setting in preparation for full immersion into the river communities. Students will be housed at the facilities of YWAM Iquitos. During this stage, students will complete their DTS lecture materials and begin work on outreach presentations, such as dramas, music and teachings for the ministry in the communities. Students will also be engaged in local ministry in the city Iquitos.
  • Stage 3: This is the 8 week outreach stage. Students will make several excursions into native villages, each lasting 8-15 days. During each excursion, the team will travel along Amazon River tributaries, living and working in various indigenous communities, sharing the love of Christ in diverse ways. Teams will assimilate into the native community to the highest degree possible, living in community housing, sharing the native diet, and accompanying members of the community in their daily tasks. After each excursion, the team will return to Iquitos for a few days of rest and recuperation before the next trip.

Comments on the Amazon DTS:

  • The core cost of the lecture phase is the same as the regular DTS: $2975 for the first three months of lecture (with the final month in Peru).
  • Stage 3 grounds fees are $1350.
  • Airfare is yet to be determined.
  • Students will have a break over Thanksgiving, but will most likely be on the field over Christmas. The exact dates of departure for Peru will determined during the first month of the DTS.
  • Participants in this program must be in excellent physical condition, and prepared to live in primitive conditions.
