TRAINING PHASE FORMATThe weekly structure of the lecture phase is as follows:
- Classroom lecture: 15-18 hours
- Work duties: 12 hours
- Small group prayer and discussion: 3 hours
- Community outreach: 4 hours (avg)
- During this time, students are required to read one assigned book every two weeks, and submit a report on each. Maintaining a personal journal is also required.
- Instructors are men and women engaged in full-time ministry within YWAM, a local church, or other ministries. Each instructor will typically teach over a five day period.
OUTREACH PHASE The outreach phase lasts seven weeks. Student teams may serve in the U.S., overseas, or a combination of both. Outreaches typically include the following:
- Work projects for the benefit of individual communities or churches
- Evangelism
- Church ministry; including dramas, teaching, and preaching
COLLEGE CREDIT The DTS and the SOE are registered with the University of the Nations. Many of our students who have gone on to study at Christian universities and colleges have received transfer credit for their YWAM training courses. DTS FOR FAMILIESYWAM Minneapolis has limited space for families. Housing availability is the main factor determining our ability to accept families. When we are able to accept families with children, child care is provided during class sessions. E-mail us for more info. FAQsWhat is a typical day like as a student? - Evenings are usually free to study and relax, but there will be some evenings used for ministry preparation and guest speakers. When there isn't ministry, weekends are free except for weekend work duties. Students are expected to take part in a Sunday morning worship service at a church of their choice.
If I do a bilingual school, do I have to speak Spanish? - No. Bilingual schools generally have a mix of students who either speak English or Spanish. Classes are given in English, with translation into Spanish. If you have an interest in learning or improving your Spanish, this is a great opportunity.
What is the housing like? - YWAM Minneapolis has one of the nicest facilities in YWAM. Students live in a dorm setting, but are not crammed in. Minnesota state code requires at least 70 sq. ft per person in sleeping areas. By YWAM standards, that's a lot of space! Students will be given drawer and closet space sufficient to hold basic necessities. Due to the mobility of our schools, students are asked to bring no more than 2 (medium-sized) suitcases of personal items. All student housing, classroom and dining areas are connected, so there's no walking through the snow to get to breakfast. We have a rec-room and several areas to study, sprawl and pray.
Is the base in the sticks? - While our 240-acre campus is in a somewhat rural area, we are not far from civilization. A coffee shop, a grocery store, and a bank are all 5 minutes away in Rockford. The Minneapolis suburbs are about 15 minutes away, and downtown about 40 minutes.
Will I have any free-time and what will I do? - Weekends are mostly free. Students are assigned a brief weekend work duty. Periodically, there will be a ministry activity. With advance notice, students who live nearby are allowed to go home up to three weekends. In the warmer months students can swim, play tennis, roller-blade, or walk through the woods. In the winter they can skate, cross-country ski, play broom-ball, or hang out in the rec-room where we have a fooseball table, billiards, bumper-pool and a snack bar.
If I do a DTS, will I be required to do an additional school as well? - The DTS in itself is an incredible experience, and it may be all the training you want to do at this point. Students coming to the DTS are not required to take any more schools. However, if you feel that the Lord may be leading you into a long-term involvement with YWAM, we will encourage you take the SOE . Many YWAM bases now require an additional school for those interested in working on staff.
Can I hold a job while I do my school? - Due to the busy schedule during the week and periodic weekend activities, it would be extremely difficult to hold a job, and we strongly discourage it.
Are scholarships available? - Scholarships are available to students from developing countries. Special scholarships are also available for children of YWAM staff.
How are payments made? - Students are asked to pay at least half of the tuition upon arrival. Within three months of the school's initiation, all fees must be paid, including outreach.
What is the food like? - YWAM Minneapolis serves excellent food. We will not skimp in this area to cut costs. We serve generous portions and generally avoid meals that are excessively high in fat content. We try to offer a small salad bar with every meal.
Why does the DTS tuition vary from base -to-base? - Within the United States, the tuition for all 5-month YWAM schools should be comparable. Each base determines its own rates. Some bases charge less for tuition, but have higher outreach fees. In calculating the total cost of a DTS, both tuition and outreach fees should be taken into consideration. YWAM Minneapolis strives to keep its tuition and outreach fees as low as possible.
