Peru Earthquake Relief

One month after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated cities on the west-central coast of Peru, thousands of families continue to struggle for survival. A team of staff and students from YWAM Minneapolis recently ministered in the region. With a $10,000 relief fund, the team was able to distribute needed food supplies to some 900 families. “It appears as if the earthquake happened yesterday,” commented base Director David Clark. “We were amazed by the apparent lack of assistance these families are receiving. We saw almost no one helping families clean up the rubble, and almost no re-construction of private homes. Many men have lost their jobs and have no means of supporting their families”. An estimated 34,000 families have lost their homes and most now live in poorly constructed shacks with limited access to clean drinking water and basic hygienic facilities.

In the mean time, several Evangelical churches in the area have taken the lead in reaching out to communities in need. Clark commented, “This is a kairos moment for the Peruvian churches. They are delivering food to families in need, and preaching the Gospel to the Peruvian people who are amazingly open.”
