Advantages of being single & in missions

Being single in missions has incredible benefits, take it from someone who’s now married. The single missionary life has many perks that can’t be had once married.

  1. Dorm Life/Community Living:

Friends, friends, friends! Climbing your bunk, decorating with fairy lights, laughing at nothing until the wee hours of the morning, sharing snacks and clothes, inside jokes, and most precious- a support system of the closest kind who rally around you; offering their prayers, love and encouragement. It’s just a fun and special time of life, soak it up, there will never be anything else quite like it.

  1. Affordability:

It’s always going to be cheaper to just pay for one person’s flights, bag fees, food, accomodation, transport, visa, insurance, program fees etc. Being single in missions means that you only have to raise funds for you and you alone, not you and your spouse (and maybe eventually your kids).

  1. Freedom and Flexibility:

Barring the ultimate and authoritative word of God that we all love to listen to, being single in missions means you get to go where you want when you want! There’s no collaborating with your significant other about that ministry you want to be part of in Timbuktu.

  1. Time:

Being single means way more time on your hands to spend with yourself, God, and your friends- there’s not a particular person in your life who you have to return home to at the end of the day, or someone who you’ve committed special time and attention to, or someone to consider when thinking about leaving the country for 6 months to go on that extended missions trip. It’s just you and you, live it up.

Enjoy these single days, like truly enjoy them, don’t let the dream of marriage distract you from the blessing that you are living in now. Being single is a great time of life and one I look back on fondly.
