OUTREACH PHASE

Making Jesus Known

The second part of every YWAM school is called Outreach. It is where you apply what you’ve learned in the Training Phase. Our outreaches are 8-weeks long and filled with exciting opportunities to not only see the lost saved but to offer hope and make a difference in the world.  While locations vary with each DTS, one thing never changes: you and the people you encounter will never be the same!

Connecting

YWAM has a vast network of outreach locations. There are more than 16,000 YWAM bases and ministries positioned around the world in a multitude of settings in almost every nation. It is very possible that the outreach for your school will connect with one of these.

Learning

Learning won’t stop when you finish the Classroom Training Phase. You will take in many new experiences as you leave what is familiar and comfortable and discover first-hand what God is doing around the world. New cultures, languages, friends, opportunities to serve and communicate the love of Jesus will surround you. And when received with an open and humble heart, each experience will be able to shape you and those you interact with to be more like Jesus.

Serving

It’s not just what you do, but the attitude and motivation through which you do it. Ministry is serving. And your outreach will include a multitude of ways to give of yourself to the individuals and communities you interact with. Building, cleaning, teaching, preaching, cooking, evangelizing, listening, playing, weeping, laughing, supporting, the list could go on. But everything we do, we do to bring honor and joy to Jesus. For He was the greatest servant of all.

Sharing

Ultimately, the purpose of the DTS Outreach is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people you serve. And you will discover there is more than one way to communicate the Good News. It will almost always involve your opening your mouth and sharing the truth of what you have personally experienced in your walk with God, very likely through a translator. But His love, forgiveness, and call to lay down our lives for Him is able to transcend any language barrier.

Choosing a location

We always seek to practice listening to God as we select the outreach location for each school. Often, we sense God’s direction to return to places we have sent teams before. Ongoing ministry relationships are very important for short-term teams. But we also might hear God directing us to go somewhere new. Through YWAM’s network of ministries, the options are almost endless. Regardless how God leads, we trust that He will have specific things He wants your team to do as well as important things He wants to do in you.

A student's perspective

“DTS Training and Outreach changed my life. I came in feeling utterly broken and full of shame. I was a soon-to-be missionary still struggling  with mental health instability. However, because of what I learned and experienced in the classroom and through reaching out to others, I now know there is nothing to be ashamed of. He uses even my broken pieces to touch lives and is daily restoring me.”
