Broom Ball

Broom ball is a fun recreational ice game, played on a frozen lake. In the game of broom ball there are two teams, each consisting of six players, a goaltender and five others. The object of the game is to score more goals than the opponent. Goals are scored by hitting the ball into the opponent’s net using the broom. Tactics and plays are similar to those used in sports such as ice hockey.

 Snowmobiling

It is popular recreational activity in Minnesota and you will see it everywhere in the winter – along the sides of highways and across frozen lakes!

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is as basic as drilling a large hole through the ice of a frozen lake (which can be up to 2 meters thick) until you can see open water. You then drop a line in the hole and wait for the fish to bite!

Snowtubing

Snowtubing is a fun recreational outdoor activity using inflatable inner tubes to slide down the snowy hills! We always look forward to snowtubing together as a base.

Ice Skating

Winter is a good time to get outdoors for both physical and mental well being. Minnesota’s winters can feel long, but the frequent bursts of arctic air and snowfall from January through March don’t deter the people from the Twin Cities from getting outside for some good, old-fashioned ice skating. The seasonal activity is taken seriously in the Twin Cities, and many venues around the metro area feature multiple rinks. Some are outdoors, some indoors and open year-round.

KITE FESTIVAL

Kites of all shapes, sizes, and colours will fill the sky over Lake Harriet when the Annual Winter Kite Festival returns in January. This free, family outdoor event held on the north end of the lake is organized by Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board in partnership with Linden Hills Neighborhood Council and East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association. You can bring your own kite or buy one there.  Enjoy music, ice-fishing lessons from Tips Outdoors and a free marshmallow roast.
